About us
A traditional local Hardware and Housewares store, Wright's carries a wide range of Hand Tools, Power Tools and DIY essentials for every job round the home. There is also an excellent range of Housewares, Kitchenware and Gifts, plus Heating, Electrical and Bathroom sundries. The shop has benefitted from a 'wee bit of an extension' into the former Arnold Clark garage behind Sinclair St. This has allowed the traditional Gardening range to be massively extended, with the addition of a mini Garden Centre, as well as an expanded range of Household Furniture and Gifts for all Occassions. The shops are connected and can be accessed from Sinclair Street, or you can use our Free Customer Car Parking on East Clyde St. We are also pleased to announce that we now accept Argyll Loves Local Gift Cards: support your local community today!

The Scotland Loves Local campaign is a national initiative designed to encourage all those who live in Scotland to think local first and support their high streets.
Our small businesses, whether a pub, cafe, tailor, butcher or a grocery shop, are the lifeblood of our Scottish economy. They take risks each and every day to create jobs and prosperity to maintain our way of life.
Whether it’s a book, or a pint of milk, a night out and a meal, a bedside table or some garden furniture, we’re asking you to take care and think local first.

Meet the Team
Our friendly and knowledgeable team, with many longstanding members, means that you will be hard pushed to find a more experienced retail team anywhere on the West Coast! Manager Ella Lawson has over 45 years of experience with Wright's and former owner C G Reid, which formerly occupied the site from 1969. Helensburgh has played a huge part in the Home Hardware (Scotland) Ltd story: C G Reid, Wright's, and 5 other Independent Ironmongers set up Home Hardware in 1983 to meet local needs and keep the High Streets alive. Fun Fact: there was much joking at the time about calling the new distribution centre Reid's and Wright's, the joke being that everyone's spelling left a lot to be desired but what they lacked in lexicology was more than made up for what they knew about Hardware! Luckily the name Home Hardware prevailed!
The History of Wright's:
100% home grown in Scotland
Our 1st shop, in Prestwick, was purchased by William Wright, a retired Marine Engineer and native of Glasgow, in 1947. The same year, down at the seafront in Prestwick, Jim Ferguson was born and 15 years later he found himself working for Mr Wright after school. Jim fell in love with the trade and jumped at the chance to buy the business in 1969, aged just 22. He respected what Mr Wright had taught him so much that he kept his mentor’s business name. From that point on Jim worked tirelessly to help independent hardware shops survive and thrive, building up a network of 10 local stores. He was one of the founding members of Home Hardware (Scotland) Ltd in 1983, a buying group that has gone on to become a thriving Ardrossan-based distribution hub, to over 40 family run businesses throughout Scotland and the north of England. Since Jim’s untimely death in 2018, the Ferguson family continue to run the business blending traditional High St values with modern approaches. We strive to support local communities and High Streets from Forres in the north to Hawick in the South. Love Local Today and help your community to thrive!
"I have visited this store on a regular basis recently and found the staff both very friendly and knowledgeable. The choice and price of the items purchased have been very competitive. Overall a great experience."
