Our Story - The Finest Shop In Alnwick
Family business from the beginning, in 1979, when Geoffrey Proudlock opened his first hardware store, following in his father’s entrepreneurial footsteps. By the turn of the millennium, House & Home, or Proudlock’s – as it was better known back then, had 5 stores across the region, and had expanded into selling other household goods.
Turn the clocks forward to today, and the business is as vibrant as ever. Most importantly, the family values of reliability & customer focus are still pivotal in everything we do.
Our amazing shop stands proudly above the cobbled streets of Alnwick, a quaint market town in Northumberland, famous for the castle & gardens. Each summer we welcome hundreds of thousands of tourists to the town, many of whom have dubbed us ‘the best shop in Alnwick’, and return year-on-year to admire the best attraction outside the castle walls.
The store itself is set across 3 floors and a marquee. Individual departments are laid out on each floor, offering high quality products, including everything from screws to beds, and the marquee out the back is a sun trapped showcase of garden furniture in the summer months – bliss!
Not only are we blessed with the castle & gardens, but also a beautiful coastline & national park within 10 miles of Alnwick town center. The buzzing tourism industry means there are many fantastic holiday homes in the area. We welcome property owners, and work closely with them & their properties, offering tailored services for furniture, furnishings & more.
Locals love the shop, and we have built up great relationships with many people from the town over the years. In fact, browsing our shop is a popular day out, and you are more than welcome to do so, our stock is constantly changing, meaning you’ll always see something new. There’s so much to look at and you are certainly not obliged to buy.
