F E Maughan hardware store can proudly boast to have been serving Whitley Bay and surrounding North East area for nearly 90 years. Looking back to the humble beginning in 1934 when Seaton Sluice house builder Frank Edward Maughan started the business in Benton, to provide a diverse range of materials required to service his house building business in Newcastle. The Whitley Bay site was opened just two years later at 40 Park Avenue to expand into storing smaller plumbing materials used in the day-to-day building activities. After rapidly attracting passing trade, a front of house counter provided the first venture into sales to the public to generate extra revenue.
World war two put a temporary hold on to operations, but after the end of the war, the building supplies and retail services went from strength to strength. In the early 1970's, the current Park Avenue store was expanded and developed into the two-floor DIY hardware store now serving Whitley Bay.
Ownership of F E Maughan has passed down through the generations from Frank to his son Rowland who joined the company in 1954 to present day Directors, David, Michael and Catherine Maughan and also Charlie and Jack, Great Great Grandson’s of Frank.
F E Maughan is a local long established family business with a diverse range of DIY products available to both trade and the public throughout Whitley Bay, Newcastle and the North East.
