What Is AdBlue and What Does It Do?
AdBlue Explained in Plain English
AdBlue is the brand name for a clear, non-toxic liquid made of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionised water. It’s also called diesel exhaust fluid, or DEF. It isn’t a fuel or an additive. It goes in its own separate tank and is sprayed into the exhaust, where it turns harmful nitrogen oxides from diesel engines into harmless nitrogen and water. That is what allows modern diesels to meet emissions rules.
The container you buy is sealed so the fluid stays clean. That matters, because contamination can cause problems in the exhaust system.
Do I Need AdBlue? How to Tell if Your Car Takes It
Only diesel vehicles use AdBlue, and not all of them. Petrol cars never do. The AA says diesel cars registered after about September 2015 from many makers, including Jaguar, Land Rover and French and German brands, typically use it,.
- Look for a blue cap. The AdBlue filler is usually blue, and it sits next to the diesel filler cap, in the boot or under the bonnet.
- Check the handbook. It tells you where the tank is and how much it holds.
- Watch the dashboard. An AdBlue warning light or a message with a mileage countdown means your car has a tank.
How Much AdBlue Does a Car Use?
How Far Does 10 Litres of AdBlue Last?
The AA says typical consumption is around 1 litre every 600 miles, but it can be as high as 1 litre every 350 miles. Based on that, a 10 litre container gives you roughly 3,500 to 6,000 miles. Most cars need a refill somewhere between 3,000 and 12,000 miles, depending on the car and how it’s driven.
How Much Does AdBlue Cost per Mile?
At £13.99 for 10 litres, our AdBlue works out at about £1.40 a litre. Here’s what that means for your annual mileage:
| How far you drive | AdBlue used (1 litre per 350 to 600 miles) | Approximate cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 miles | 1.7 to 2.9 litres | £2.33 to £4.00 |
| 5,000 miles | 8.3 to 14.3 litres | £11.66 to £20.00 |
| 10,000 miles | 16.7 to 28.6 litres | £23.31 to £40.00 |
Costs are rounded and based on the AA’s range for typical use. Your car’s handbook or dealer will tell you more about your own consumption.

Flow AdBlue 10 Litre Price and What’s Included
Flow AdBlue 10ltr With Nozzle comes in a 10 litre container with a nozzle in the pack, so you can pour straight into the tank without a funnel. At £13.99 it’s priced to be cheap enough to stock up. We checked national retailers’ 10 litre prices on 14 October 2026:
| Retailer | Product | Size | Price | Per litre |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Hardware Direct | Flow AdBlue with nozzle | 10 litres | £13.99 | £1.40 |
| Screwfix | Redex AdBlue | 10 litres | £14.99 | £1.50 |
| Euro Car Parts | Triple QX AdBlue | 10 litres | £14.99 | £1.50 |
That’s £1 less than the 10 litre prices at Screwfix and Euro Car Parts on the day we checked. Prices move, so we can’t promise it will always be the lowest, but we do keep it priced to be good value.
How to Top Up AdBlue Step by Step
How to Add AdBlue to Your Car or Van
- Find the tank. It’s under the bonnet, in the boot, or next to the diesel filler cap. The cap is usually blue. Check your handbook if you’re unsure.
- Park on level ground and switch the engine off.
- Attach the nozzle to the container, as supplied with ours, or use a clean funnel.
- Pour slowly until the tank is full, and stop if it gets close to the top.
- Refit the cap, wipe up any spills and check your handbook to see if the car needs a reset.
- Wait before starting. TotalEnergies advises not starting the vehicle until its computer has validated the refill, and some cars need a short drive before the warning light clears.
What Happens if You Run Out of AdBlue?
The dashboard warning usually appears with around 1,500 miles left, so you do have time. If you ignore it and the tank empties, engine power reduces and the car may not restart. The AA says you’ll need to add 3 to 5 litres before it will start again. Keep a spare container at home so you can top up the same day.
Storing AdBlue: Heat, Frost and Shelf Life
Does AdBlue Freeze or Go Off?
AdBlue freezes at around −11°C, which is a real consideration in a Scottish winter. Freezing and thawing don’t spoil it, and many vehicles have systems to warm it. It does have a shelf life, though. Kept out of direct sunlight at a temperature between about −6°C and 25°C, it typically lasts 12 to 18 months. Store it in a garage or shed, not in a hot car boot over summer.
Don’t dilute it with water, and don’t top it up with anything other than AdBlue. The concentration needs to be right for the system to work.

Our Flow AdBlue 10 litre with nozzle is £13.99, about £1.40 a litre. On 14 October 2026, Screwfix and Euro Car Parts listed a 10 litre container at £14.99.
Do I need AdBlue for my car?
Only if you have a modern diesel with an AdBlue tank. Look for a blue filler cap near the diesel filler, in the boot or under the bonnet, or check your handbook. Petrol cars don’t use AdBlue.
How far will 10 litres of AdBlue take me?
Roughly 3,500 to 6,000 miles for most cars, based on the AA’s figures of 1 litre every 350 to 600 miles. Your own consumption depends on your car and how you drive.
How do I top up AdBlue?
Park on level ground, find the blue AdBlue cap, attach the nozzle or a clean funnel and pour in slowly until full. Wipe up any spills, refit the cap and wait for the car’s computer to validate the refill before starting. Some cars need a short drive to clear the warning light.
What happens if I run out of AdBlue?
The warning usually appears with around 1,500 miles left. If the tank runs empty, engine power is reduced and the car may not restart until you add 3 to 5 litres.
Can I put AdBlue in the diesel tank?
No. AdBlue goes in its own tank only. If you put it in the fuel tank by mistake, do not start the engine, and call a mechanic or your breakdown service.
Does AdBlue freeze in winter?
AdBlue freezes at around -11°C, but freezing and thawing do not damage it. Many vehicles have a system to warm the tank. Store spare containers in a garage or shed.
How long does AdBlue last once I’ve bought it?
Stored out of direct sunlight at between about -6°C and 25°C, it typically lasts 12 to 18 months. Avoid keeping it in a hot car boot in summer.
Is AdBlue the same as diesel exhaust fluid?
Yes. AdBlue is the brand name for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), a mix of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionised water. Look for the ISO 22241 standard on the container.
Can I dilute AdBlue with water or make my own?
No. AdBlue has to be a precise concentration to work, so only use sealed, ready-made AdBlue and never top it up with water.
Can I order AdBlue online and collect it in store?
Yes. Order Flow AdBlue 10 litre on our website and choose Click & Collect from your nearest Home Hardware store.
